Some people have called the Israeli military a “bully” in its response to Hamas’s attacks, and accuse Israel of “overkill.” However, those who initiate aggression against others are morally responsible for the consequences of their actions; that means, if Hamas initiates violence against Israel, then ultimately Hamas is responsible for the civilian deaths in Gaza. A comparison would be WW II, when the Allies bombed many parts of Germany and killed many German civilians. Were their deaths the fault of the Allies? No. The real moral responsibility for their deaths was Hitler’s, because he initiated the aggression. And if Mr. Jones shoots into his neighbor’s house, and the neighbor shoots back, killing Mr. Jones’s child, the child’s death is the fault of Mr. Jones–he started it.
